Consent-or-Pay: At the Gates of Meta’s Final Club
Meta, a company that provides Facebook and Instagram, became one of the wealthiest companies in the world by surveillance of its consumers for advertising purposes. In the EU, Meta needs European consumers’ consent. Yet, in 2018-2023, the company engaged in surveillance without consumer consent, resulting in legal battles that posed an existential risk to the company’s presence in Europe.
