The notion of contract is not as unproblematic as might at first sight appear. Its theoretical basis in particular is very difficult to decipher. It is arguable that whereas the Middle Ages and 16th century produced an exceptionally subtle foundational account, the rise of modernity largely destroyed this doctrine. Nowadays we are far from possessing an adequate theory. This also means that the (ever more) widespread application of social contract doctrine in present-day political life is a questionable enterprise.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) became a reality with the adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998 and its entry into force on 1 July 2002. The Court is a permanent institution and self-standing international organization, established beyond the United Nations – but in fact existing and operating in close connection with it. One of the most contentious issues of the negotiations that led to the adoption of the Court’s constitution was the issue of its jurisdiction. An important question for analysis is the following: how little of an international crime need take place on State Party territory for the Court to have jurisdiction? This is the main question that will be addressed in this article.

Symphonic Metamorphoses maps the vulnerabilities of orchestral musicians in uncertain job markets in the Netherlands and the United States. While a great deal of academic attention has been paid to precarity in a multiplicity of sectors, musicians, the original gig workers have escaped extensive focus. The 21st century interplay of efficiency-driven cultural policies, general downward trends in cultural financing, and the devastating impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated working musicians’ employment. The story of their quest for fair remuneration and acceptable employment conditions parallels challenges faced by precarious workers in other sectors. Placing Dutch musicians on center stage, this article introduces the reader to several strata of vulnerability.
