The Legal Research Master Conference 2020 will be will be focused on questions regarding the interrelation of the power of law and other powers such as social power, political power, judicial power and economic power.

Law has power. It can determine our behaviour, shape our choices, reward us or punish us. At the same time, law is not free from other powers. It is made and shaped, among others, by political power, social power, judicial power and by economic power. Where do the origins of the legal power lie? Is it just a product of greater forces? Can the law grant power to others, or does it only receive it from other powers? Can law be used to tame and shape other forms of power as we wish?

As the political climate heats up, social divisions are rapidly sharpening, and our economic system is once again called into question, these age-old questions have gained a new relevance. In the 2020 Legal Research Master's Conference, we will explore the interrelations between the law and different forms of power. More specifically, we will examine how the law is shaped by other, external, powers, as well as how the law can shape other powers. In doing so, we hope to become more aware of the potential of law in shaping and guiding other powers to good.
