Summary

In this lecture, Professor Gregory Shaffer will talk about his latest book, Emerging Powers and the World Trading System: The Past and Future of International Economic Law (CUP 2021).

The book consists of in-depth case studies of how three emerging economies – Brazil, India, and China – have transformed themselves, particularly in terms of legal capacity, in recent decades and how their transformations are presently affecting the trade legal order itself. The preface and introductory chapter (attached) provide an overview of the book’s treatment and perception of law, specifically international trade law, as well as the methodology employed in this massive empirical work that took years to complete.
